Nursery and Landscape sales have topped $2.1 billion a year and the industry needs an additional 2,200 full-time and 3,200 part-time employees.
At DCTC, you can learn what it takes to become successful in the Landscape and Horticulture industry.
May 12 , 2006
Karen Filloon, a graduate of the DCTC Landscape/Horticulture program, is truly an outstanding alumna.
Many may be familiar with Karen as the meteorologist on KSTP-TV and WCCO Radio.
After several years of television and radio work, Karen decided it was time for a change. She saw a natural connection between meteorology and horticulture, so she enrolled at DCTC.
Karen graduated from DCTC in 2003 with a degree in Landscape Design. While at DCTC, she completed and passed the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association (MNLA) Professional Certification exam and interned at Gerten's Garden Center.
Last spring, she was honored with a Certificate of Merit for her entry in MNLA's annual design competition. Karen is currently employed as a landscape designer for Outdoor Environments in Savage.
In addition to her accomplishments in her two chosen fields, Karen is also a leader in the community. She has taught Meteorology at the University of St.
Thomas; served on the board of the local chapter of the MS Society; has been an active volunteer for the American Heart Association and American Cancer Society and currently serves on the public relations committee of MNLA.
During the past year, Karen has been instrumental in spearheading fundraising efforts for a new greenhouse at DCTC.
We have certainly appreciated all of Karen's contributions to the college.
She is extremely valuable to us and we are very proud to have her as an alumna, said Janet Lekson of the DCTC Foundation.
