Once again, the landscape design students at Dakota County Technical College entered a juried competition at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Winners would be invited to install a display at the Arboretum this summer. Once again their entry was indeed selected, one of fifteen entries accepted out of 74 submissions.

The theme of this summer’s Arboretum exhibition, titled Art to A-Maze, is the relationship between humans and nature. Fifteen installations will be located along an Art to A-Maze Walk leading visitors from the Oswald Visitor’s Center to the newly installed Maze Garden. The exhibit runs at the Arboretum between June 16 and September 30, 2007.
The DCTC installation, titled Story Grove, explores the tension between humans and nature. It will take the form of a "grove" of Story Pillars, each exploring a different aspect of the human/nature relationship. The pillars will feature text, mixed media images, and a planter on the top.

As written in the submitted application, "Viewers will wander among this "grove" of Story Pillars in order to experience the rich detail on each and to learn about the sometimes troubled relationship between humans and nature. Visitors will be inspired to think about what they can learn by careful and close observation of the natural world and actions they can take - as individuals - to be better stewards of our fragile earth."

Construction of the project has begun in a student’s workshop, and will be installed at the Arboretum in May. We are being greatly aided by donations of material and labor from the landscape department at Bachman’s, Inc.
