The program’s Landscape Horticulture club, supported by plant sales, helps fund all student participation in these professional activities!
The landscape program at DCTC actively participates in national and state trade and professional organizations. This participation lends the program a strong state and national presence, as well as providing avenues for keeping our curriculum strong and up to date. It also provides our students with extra opportunities for learning experiences and industry contacts, as well as the benefit of graduating from state and nationally recognized program.
PLANET, the major national trade organization serving
America's green industry, actively partners with
educational institutions. Our student club is a
member club of PLANET, and faculty is active in
the organization. The program itself is PLANET
accredited, the only such program in the state
of Minnesota.
Our annual participation in the PLANET Student Career Days (SCD) offers students an opportunity to interact with students, employers, and educators from all around the country. Held each year in March at some college around the country, the SCD features competitions, job fair, workshops, and tours. We have been bringing teams to the SCD since 1985. In 2007, the event was held at Michigan State University in Lansing, Michigan; the next event will be held in March 2008 at North Metro Technical College outside of Atlanta, Georgia.
PLANET also offers competitive scholarships to
member programs. For more information on PLANET,

We pride ourselves on being the landscape program most
active in the MNLA. Our faculty is active on MNLA
committees, and attends many of its educational
programs. Many of our students become student members
and attend the many MNLA educational workshops,
and many graduates join MNLA committees.
The Minnesota Green Expo, the annual winter convention co-sponsored by the MNLA and the Minnesota Turf and Grounds Foundation (MTGF), is a three-day smorgasbord of educational workshops and the largest trade show in the region. It is held in January at the Minneapolis Convention Center and many of our students participate, especially for its job fair. Some students also help at the registration desk on one of the days.
MNLA also operates a Certified Professional program, which certifies industry members that pass a rigorous examination. Between the March 2007 and January 2008 testing dates fourteen DCTC students and graduates passed the examination. Over 100 DCTC grads are certified, and one out of ten certified professionals in the state of Minnesota received an education here.
The MNLA also funds and operates the MNLA Foundation by donations from industry, various fund-raising events, and on a voluntary small contribution added on to purchases by MNLA members from MNLA suppliers. The Foundation funds research and education at area colleges and universities. The Foundation awards a couple of scholarships to DCTC students each year, and has also made several grants to the program for various educational projects. For more information on the MNLA, visit their web site at http://www.mnla.biz/.
